We are proud to announce that this spring we will be offering a series of great new services with the same level of high quality Garden Creations service you have enjoyed for over 30 years. Our New forestry division will be offering services such as pruning of trees and shrubs, removals of hazardous or unwanted trees, storm damage control and more. The addition of these wonderful new services are sure to make managing and beautifying your property that much easier! We have updated our website to include these services and many more. Please refer to the list below and check out our website for more information.

We wanted to help build a culture of optimism at the House by creating a beautiful, collaborative oasis that evaporates stress and an appealing way to represent a healthy tomorrow.

Garden Creations joined fellow Landscape Ontario members to build the House’s first gardens. Our staff of certified horticulturalists continues regular upkeep of the landscape, maintaining the garden that is a substantial source of Garden Creations’ pride.

As a spring awakening thaws the last of the leftover snowbanks, it’s getting more and more difficult to find evidence that significant snow had fallen earlier this month.

The bad news about winter’s tempered wrath is that plant material’s dormancy period may have been interrupted, increasing the chances of winter damage.

The good news is that spring bulbs are coming up.

And the best news is that Garden Creations is already getting set to work on designs commissioned by clients in the fall and winter.

We also plan to visit our clients before Easter, tidying up their properties before family and friends drop by.

To find out more about what Garden Creations of Ottawa is all about, stop by and visit our booth at the Ottawa Home & Garden Show. We’ll be at booth 2130 from March 22-25 at the CE Centre on 4899 Uplands Drive.

It’s never easy to say goodbye, especially when the people involved are excellent clients.

Alan has been a Garden Creations of Ottawa client for many years, but decided this season not to sign on for a maintenance agreement.

“It hasn’t been an easy decision,” Alan wrote in an e-mail.

“I have appreciated your excellent service and advice over the years, often recommending Garden Creations to others.”

GCO installed a complete landscape at Alan’s property: walkways, a patio, a deck, fencing, lighting, an irrigation system, trees, shrubs and flowers. Alan noted that that entire project’s installation was hassle-free and never disruptive to him or his family.

“Thank you. I hope you, your family and company continue to flourish.”

Another longtime Garden Creations client, Jane, relocated from her home and into a condo this spring.

“Unfortunately, (we) will no longer need the fine services of Garden Creations of Ottawa,” Jane wrote in an e-mail.

“We love this house and the only thing I can say is that a great part of its beauty has been due to you and your people.”

Jane added that she forwarded GCO’s contact information to the new owners, who are “thrilled to bits” with their new property.

“Thanks again and wishing you all the success you so richly deserve.”

GCO is grateful for the kind words of Alan and Jane and, contract or not, we’ll always consider them both as Garden Creations clients.

Trees can outlive generations, but can just as easily show symptoms of an expiry date.

Garden Creations of Ottawa Ltd. (GCO) is able to now diagnose those warning signals for its customers by offering a new tree care service.

The new tree care division was made possible with the hiring of Tyler Kearney, a graduate of Humber College’s Urban Arboriculture program.

But before Tim Kearney, president of GCO, was comfortable hiring his son Tyler to head the new tree maintenance service, Tim wanted to see Tyler pay his dues and develop a professional resume.

“When Tyler graduated this program,” Tim said, “he got some valuable work experience with a company in Ottawa called Trillium Tree Experts.

“I’ve always had job opportunities available to my sons if they’re interested, but they’ve got to prove themselves first,” Tim continued. “They can’t just walk in and expect a job. They have to be a worthwhile asset to the company and provide a worthwhile service.”

When Tyler approached his father in the wintertime and floated the idea of a tree care service, Tim responded: “Why not? Let’s give it a shot.”

To that end, GCO sent out a brochure to many of its customers to promote this new facet of the business.

“Quickly, we’ve lined up multitudes of these tree visits,” Tim said. “What Tyler does is he goes to the site and looks at the mature trees. He’s not really looking at ground-level stuff. He’s looking at the big things like maple trees, or the old pine tree in the backyard.”

Tyler is looking for symptoms of disease and to identify any structural problems that could make the tree vulnerable to storm damage down the road. Whether a tree is needing something as simple as a good pruning away of dead growth, or a more intensive operation like cabling, Tyler will take care of it.

“Cabling is needed if you have an old tree where two branches grow in what’s called a ‘wheat crotch.’ That’s where two branches come into one, sort of like a slingshot,” Tim explained.

“If it’s a certain type of tree, during a storm that one piece will always give way, almost like large-scale wishbone,” he said. “There’s a procedure called cabling and Tyler can do that. You cable the trees so those branches are held together and won’t rock back and forth.

“It’s not 100 per cent foolproof, but it’s pretty close.”

The first goal of the tree care service is always to save the tree. However, some trees are beyond repair and need to be removed. GCO can do that, and can also do stump grinding afterwards for those removed trees.

If you’re in the Ottawa area and have a tree in your yard needing a check-up, give Garden Creations of Ottawa Ltd. a call, 613-822-0716, or send us an e-mail: info@gcottawa.com
